Organic Veggies Straight From the Farm: Sign up for the 2020 CSA Season

fixdotcom_cutting out middlemenCSA Newark is a local CSA pick-up spot for local, certified organic produce grown by Farmer John Krueger at Circle Brook Farm in Andover, NJ. Members pick up their weekly share of locally grown, seasonal, organic veggies every Wednesday in Newark’s Ironbound close to Penn Station. Sign up for the 2020 CSA season is open now and deliveries of the shares will start Wednesday, June 10th and continue for 24 consecutive weeks through November 18th.

As a member you support a local, diverse, small scale farm (a steward of the land!) and enjoy seasonal, locally grown, certified organic veggies. We think John’s veggies taste better then supermarket veggies and are also more affordable too.

Due to the global pandemic, we are changing our procedures for the 2020 season, but, YES, WER ARE ON. To minimize everyone’s risk and maximize our ability to maintain social distance during pick-up, all veggie shares will be pre-packed on the farm this year.

Here are the 2020 season share options:

Option1: Pre-bagged PREMIUM Share: $795 for the season (24 weeks = $33.13 per week) ($720 for the share and $75 for the pre-bagging, material and labor). Our fellow CSA location in Jersey City (Downtown Harvest) has a list of the produce that was contained last year in the PREMIUM Share (Full Share), so you can get an idea of what to expect, even though there are variations each year depending on the weather of course.

Option 2: Pre-bagged MEDIUM Share: $480 for the season (24 weeks = $20.00 per week). Pre-packaged MEDIUM Shares (Half Shares) tend to be a little more than half in weight and as close to half as possible in all other way.

Optional ad-on: Circle Brook Farm Pastured Eggs.

In 2017, John built a mobile chicken coop (“chicken tractor”) used for raising birds on pasture. The birds are outside all day, where they feed on the grass and other plants and insects as well as the vegetable wastes which the farm generates. The birds spend the night on roosts inside the chicken tractor protected from predators. Their foraging diet is supplemented with milled grain (corn and soy) that is locally sourced and non GMO. Egg shares are $5/dozen/week.

1 dozen/week = $120 for the season      2 dozen/week  = $240 for the season

There will also be a fruit share option, but the fruit delivery starts later in the season, information to come.

The core time for share pick-up is Wednesdays, 4pm-7pm at the Button Factory: 85 Hamilton Street in Newark, NJ – in the Ironbound – close to Penn Station. If you run late, or need to come the next morning instead, let us know and we will hold your share for late pick-up, no problem.

The pick-up location is run by volunteers – to make it all possible, we ask each of the members for volunteering time (one 3.5 hour shift for the season) and for a $10 site fee. This is the time and money we need from you here at the pick-up site to make it work. The money for the share itself goes to the farmer.

Final words:

All shares varies in size and content throughout the season. Typically the first and second week is smaller, then shares become large and stay large and bountiful through the season. The type of veggies vary with what is growing on the fields – but have a look at some past shares captured in pictures here or in words here to get a better understanding what the shares look like.
