Spring_croppedCSA Newark is a local CSA pick-up spot for local, certified organic produce grown by Farmer John Krueger at Circle Brook Farm in Andover, NJ. Members pick up their weekly share of locally grown, seasonal, organic veggies every Wednesday in Newark’s Ironbound close to Penn Station. Sign up for the 2019 CSA season is open now and deliveries of the shares will start Wednesday, June 12th and continue for 24 consecutive weeks through November 20th.

As a member you support a local, diverse, small scale farm (a steward of the land!) and enjoy seasonal, locally grown, certified organic veggies. We think John’s veggies taste better then supermarket veggies and are also more affordable too!

Here are the details for the 2019 CSA Newark season:

Share pickup is every Wednesday, 4pm-7pm at the Button Factory: 85 Hamilton Street in Newark, NJ – in the Ironbound – close to Penn Station. (Please note: Google places us 3 blocks off – we are really between New Jersey Railroad Avenue and Bruen Street, Google places us correct if you type 81 Hamilton Street…). If you run late, let us know and we will pack and hold your share for late pick-up, no problem.

To become a member, you pay for your share prior to the start of the deliveries in June – this allows the farmer to plan ahead, buy seeds etc. and grow plenty of veggies for the members.

The pick-up location is run by volunteers and to make it all possible, we ask each of the members for volunteering time (one 3.5 hour shift for the season) and for a $20 site fee for the season from each member. This is the time and money we need from you here at the pick-up site to make it work. The money for the share itself goes to the farmer.

2019 Membership options:

Option 1: PREMIUM Share: $700 for the season (24 weeks = $29.17 per week) – 25$ EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT IF PAID BY 03/01

The Premium share will on average contain 12 -13 items. There will be more variety then in the basic share and it some cases larger quantities of products such as peas and beans in the premium share. There will be more greens in the premium, for example perhaps 2 bunches of spinach instead of one and a greens item during mid-summer when these are scarce. There may be a few items that are only provided in the premium share. While herbs will be included in the basic share they will be provided more consistently in the premium share.

Option 2: BASIC Share: $600 for the season (24 weeks = $25.00 per week) – 25$ EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT IF PAID BY 03/01

The Basic share is approximately ¾ the size of the premium share. It will contain on average 8 to 9 items and will include more common produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, potatoes cucumbers etc. There will be smaller quantities of some items, for example perhaps 3 instead of 4 of crops such as peppers, eggplant, squash and cucumbers.

Membership form for the PREMIUM share or the BASIC share can be found here: 2019 CSA Member Form_FULL shares.

Option 3: SPLITTING a PREMIUM Share: $350 for the season (24 weeks = $14.58 per week)

John does not offer half shares, but the organizers of CSA Newark enable splitting a full share, under some conditions. You can either sign up with a friend you know already or ask us to help you find a member to split a share with. Here are the conditions:

  1. The share is split between the two share partners: you will each pay $350 and then split a PREMIUM share between you. Some more guidelines for sharing can be found here.
  2. Each of you is asked to pay the $20 site fee – so the CSA will receive $40 in total from you and your partner.
  3. Each of the two split-share members is asked to do a volunteering shift for the season.

Final words:

All shares varies in size and content throughout the season. Typically the first and second week is smaller, then shares become large and stay large and bountiful through the season. The type of veggies vary with what is growing on the fields – but have a look at some past shares in pictures here or in words here to get a better understanding what the shares look like. Generally speaking: PREMIUM shares are great for larger families, BASIC shares are great for small families or for vegetarian couples, splitting a share makes mostly sense for singles or couples who do not eat so much veggies. Of course you might not fit into these generalizations, ’cause, well, they are generalizations …
