Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the season run?

The season runs 24 weeks; mid-June through the end of November.  Farmer John usually does an optional “Stock up for the Winter” share in December that may just last you into March.

How much is it?

Full shares are $565 for 24 weeks which works out to be $23.54/wk.  Half shares are available for $282.50.

What about half shares?

Starbrite Farm does not technically offer half shares.  Thus, half share members will be paired together by CSA Newark.  It is up to you to decide how you and your share partner split the share.  For example, you could divide it each week, or alternate pick ups.

How much food do I get each week?

As the season progresses, the amount of food you receive grows.  You can expect approximately 1 standard paper grocery bag (a la a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s bag) full of produce each week.  See our website and blog for delicious photos.

What might I get each week?

The share might include any of the following:  various types of beans, peas, kale, arugula, various types of lettuce, tomatoes, gooseberries, melons, summer squash, winter squash, turnips, parsnips, garlic, garlic scapes, eggplant, carrots, radishes, herbs, fennel, dandelion greens, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, onions, shallots, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower (of all shades), brussels sprouts, edamame, watermelon, tamatillos, swiss chard, peppers (sweet & hot), pumpkin, daikon, celery, cabbage, cucumbers, collards.  OH MY!

Where does the produce come from?

John Krueger of Starbrite Farm, a certified organic farm in Andover, NJ.

Is there an option for fruit?

John can source local fruit for part of the season.  This fruit share has an additional charge and it entirely optional.  Contact us for more information.

Where/when is the pick up?

Pick up will be in the Ironbound, at The Button Factory Courtyard, 85 Hamilton St.  It is currently scheduled for Thurs. late afternoons.  Specific time TBD.

What happens if I can’t make the pick up?

If you can’t make the scheduled pick up, you may send someone in your stead.  In some cases, shares may be able to be pre-bagged and left at the drop off location for pick up that evening.  Anything left for the next day will be donated to area shelters and food pantries.

Are there required work hours?

You will be required to work 1 set up shift and 1 full shift per season.  Set up shifts arrive early, unload the truck and set up the site for pick up.  Full shifts then stay for the duration of the pick up and assist in tearing down.

How do I pay?

Payment is accepted via check to Starbrite Farm.

Is there a payment plan?

You may make your membership payment with 2 checks; one for a $100 deposit dated 4/10, one for the remaining amount dated 6/1.  Both checks must be received by 4/10.

How will be notified about weekly updates?

Weekly updates will be posted on our blog, www.CSANewark.wordpress.com, here we’ll post updates from Farmer John and let you know what the share will be each week.  Each time there is a new blog post, you’ll receive an email giving you the option to read it at your leisure.

When do I need to let you know that I’m in?

We’d love to know of your interest right away.  Membership forms will go out in the next week and payment is due 4/10/11.

  1. I just talked to a friend in Minnesota who said CSA shares there are $700-800 and the season is shorter. He couldn’t believe what a deal this is!
